INVITATIONS HOME

Dinner parties are a reflection of the Swiss approach to friendship. They are an opportunity to spend quality time with one another. From birthday parties to summer barbecues, expect a lengthy sit-down meal. Make sure you are punctual and expect to take your time.

Changing seats to mingle with different people is not customary, and can be perceived as rude, or can suggest that you’re not interested in the people you are with. Switching seats when coffee is served is acceptable, however. Before starting to eat, in German-speaking Switzerland say “En guete,” and in the French part, “Bon appétit.” With wine, always wait until the host or hostess says “Cheers” (“Prost” or “Santé”). When clinking glasses or simply raising them to one another, it is important to look each of the guests in the eye as you do so.
